20 kW Off-Grid Solar PV for a UN Medical Centre in Cairo

Client: A UN agency operating in Cairo

Continuous operations through grid instability, with a pergola-integrated solar canopy and multi-hours critical-load reserve.

Context

The UN agency's medical centre in Cairo supports UN humanitarian activities that cannot tolerate unplanned outages. Repeated grid instability across 2024 disrupted clinical scheduling and put refrigerated medical inventory at risk. Nash was engaged to design and deliver a continuity-grade power solution sized to the facility's critical load.

Challenge

  1. 1Maintain continuous power to clinical refrigeration, IT systems, and lighting through extended grid events.
  2. 2Work within a constrained rooftop and courtyard footprint shared with existing MEP plant.
  3. 3Deliver a structural solution that integrated visually with the facility, including a shaded outdoor waiting area.
  4. 4Coordinate civil, electrical, and PV scopes under a single procurement and schedule.

Solution

Scope

Design, supply, and installation of a 20 kW off-grid solar PV system with battery storage, structural pergola, electrical tie-in, and monitoring. Includes single-line diagrams, structural calculations, as-built documentation, and operator training.

Technologies

  • Tier-1 monocrystalline PV modules
  • MUST-series hybrid inverter configured for off-grid operation
  • Battery bank sized for the facility's critical-load continuity profile (chemistry per project specification)
  • Galvanized steel pergola structure
  • Remote monitoring and yield telemetry

Engagement model

Single-source design-build under the client's procurement framework, with weekly status reporting and a single Nash account lead coordinating civil, electrical, and PV trades.

Duration

Approximately 10 weeks from kickoff to commissioning.

Outcome

Quantitative results

  • 20 kW PV capacity installed with monitored yield against design model.
  • Multi-hours critical-load reserve through battery storage, sized to the facility's continuity-grade load profile.
  • Zero clinical-day disruption attributable to power events post-commissioning.

Qualitative

The pergola-integrated canopy added a shaded outdoor area used by patients and staff, turning a continuity investment into a visible facility improvement.

Artifacts available on request
